The King needs you!
Our kingdom, Castile, is being attacked by the Normans and the Muslims, so the King needs you, people from the nobility, to defend the territory. You are going to be the new vassal's king. The King will grant you with a huge land (fiefdom) to govern. In exchange, as his vassal, you will have to correspond the King with military aid (helping him in the battles), economic aid (paying taxes to him) and council when he needs your advice in the Royal Council of the Kingdom.
For becoming his vassal you will have to participate in a Homage ceremony:
Homage in the Middle Ages was the ceremony in which a feudal tenant or vassal pledged reverence and submission to his feudal lord, receiving in exchange the symbolic title to his new position (investiture). It was a symbolic acknowledgement to the lord that the vassal was, literally, his man (homme).
The Act of Homage consists in the following steps:
- Homage: the vassal put his hands into his future lord and declare the will to be his vassal: "Lord, I am your man". The lord answer: "I receive you as my man".
- The oath of fealthy: the vassal stands up and with his hands on the Holy Book (Bible) says: I am faithful to you, as man has to be for his Lord, without tricks".
- The osculum: the Lord says: "I receive you and take you as my man and I kiss you in sign of fealthy".
- The investiture: the Lord gives to the vassal a fief (symbolized by a handful of soil or a bunch of flower). And the Lord touches the vassal's shoulders with a sword.
